Artist's Description
In the midst of life, 2009. When i sit down and look at the photos I've taken on a particular shoot, I try to look for something that will give me a name for it. In the case of the missions, for example, I use Spanish names; for churches, I'll use terms from the Latin Mass. In cemeteries, if at all possible, I'll use a brief snippet or sometimes the entire epitaph carved on a grave or tomb, as in this photo of a gravestone from Ross Bay which reads "in the midst of life, we are in death".

I was born and raised in Southern California and spent my life on the West Coast. In 2002 I became the third generation of my family to live in Washington after moving from San Francisco. I've been taking pictures since my childhood starting with a pin hole camera I made from a National Geographic World. Growing up, my family and I took yearly vacations, and like a lot of kids, I usually wound up posing for photos. It was my father's enthusiasm and love for photography though that inspired me as a child and continues to inspire me today.
